Do you know where the wilds things go…

Can I Get A What What

Ahhh downtown LA. I need to spend some more time there. Definitely tons of wild things in those parts. While Keiko and Helena were visiting, we went downtown to visit with the Corey ladies. I usually save downtown for my hair appointments, art walk, and the occasional flower crown hunt. But there really are some great restaurants and bars as well.

I was working an event at Beauty Bar (RIP) one night, back when I was still new to town, and was given some advice: “Don’t get stuck in your bubble.” Basically, LA is made up of lots of little areas. You’ve got the west side, valley, downtown, Hollywood… and in all of those sections, there are even more smaller parts. There is so much to explore and discover. I’ll be honest, I didn’t fully listen. I’ve definitely found a few gems and just kept returning to them. But after trying all these new places while Keiko was here, I have a new mission to try even more. I want to be the restaurant expert when friends come to town. The only way to do that is to eat my way through them. And I’m ok with that!

Crafts and Cocktails: Part 2

This is just a continuation post from the last one. More detail shots of the DIY stations, as well as Elsie and Emma from A Beautiful Mess. They were so cute in person and it was really nice finally getting to meet them. Any party with food and drinks is awesome in my book, but throw in some good company and DIY, and I’m sold! Alexis helped me by taking some of the photos. I tend to get distracted by my surroundings and forget that I should be taking pictures. “I get by with a little help from my friends.”

In other news, I’ve gotten sick again which is really annoying. Keiko comes to visit soon, so I need to get healthy and stay healthy. Off to bed I go!

This past Saturday was the Crafts and Cocktails event with Zooey Magazine, Seychelles, and Ruche. I grabbed Alexis and Liz and headed down for some DIY and sugary fun. The place was packed! There were tons of treats when you first walked in (Alexis and I were particularly fond of the lemon bars). There was a cupcake decorating table and OPI nail station in one room. In the other, there were fabric wrapped hanger, shoe clip, and bow making stations.

The entire event was pure eye candy. Lots of beautiful little details everywhere. The backdrop for the photo booth was made out of cute little vintage saucers (I really want to make a backdrop like this for shoots!). There were beautiful dresses and skirts from Ruche hanging in each room. And since it was in the Seychelles office, there were also tons of incredible shoes everywhere too. I got to see the new items for fall and was completely drooling. I can’t wait for them to come out!

I have a ton of photos from this day that I wanted to post, so “part 2” will be up tomorrow.

a little bit closer

Closer by Tegan and Sara on Grooveshark

Over the last few weeks I’ve been working on some new flower crowns for Emerging Thoughts! I’m very excited that we’ll be putting them up on the site later this week. Going downtown to look for supplies was super exciting AND stressful. I never knew there were stores just filled floor to ceiling with flowers. It was intense!

I’ll definitely be keeping one of each style for myself! I love them and hope you guys do too!

Colors and leaves…

I was looking through older photos (these are from November), to see which colors I want to put back in my hair on Thursday. I totally forgot to post these, although you may have seen them on Keiko’s blog. She still owes me one more set. I’m going to have to get the blackmail started soon if she doesn’t give them up!

So far, today has been a lazy day of painting panda necklaces and making to do lists in my head. I worked a video game release late last night and completely over slept this morning. So much for being productive on my day off. Tonight is my belated Valentine’s Day date with Will so I better start getting ready and caffeinating. My bed is just so comfy…

She’s in love with the world

Fell in Love With a Girl by The White Stripes on Grooveshark

I had this insane idea to go the month of February without wearing my jeggings, but then realized that it was basically the worst idea ever. So as a compromise, I decided to at least attempt to not wear them as much. It sounds silly but for someone who has enough clothing to dress a small village, I sure do wear the same pants a lot. They are just so comfortable and perfect.

The shopping day in the above photos happened to be warm enough to get away with bare legs (how’s that snow storm, East Coasters?). Today is a bit cooler but I’ve got some tights that should do the trick for my outfit later tonight. Although full disclosure, I’m currently in my jeggings. Hey, at least I know a good thing when I see it.

I watched, I let it burn

I love It by Icona Pop on Grooveshark

I don’t get sick of things easily. This song, for example, has been on repeat since hearing it on Girls. I love that I got my boyfriend into watching that show. Fun fact: His dad actually got me into watching it when I was visiting with his parents in New York.

Anyway, I’ve been working on my new years goals for the year. I think I’ll do a “check in” post about that soon. It keeps me accountable and I like that. I need that.

I booked both my trip to Spain AND Vietnam so I’m in ultra conservation mode. That being said, Anna and I are going shopping tomorrow. We may just hit up a thrift or second hand store, but we’ll see. This top was actually acquired at a second hand shop in Sherman Oaks called Rewind. I was going into Buffalo Exchange when I saw it and figured I’d check it out. $8.50 later and I have a new blouse and have curbed the urge to shop! At least for one day. Hooray!

You like it my way…

Tony the Beat by The Sounds on Grooveshark

I’ve been a little under the weather recently. It’s going around and I guess it was only a matter of time. Good news is that since work is slower than usual, I’ve had plenty of time to rest and recover. I think (fingers crossed) that I might be better by tomorrow. As soon as I’m well, I will be joining LA Fitness and starting to work out with some of my co-workers. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve definitely worked out more this month than I was averaging last year. But I feel like this will get me into the routine that I so desperately need.

In other news, I’ve been working on stuff for As All Get Out. I’m slowly getting my shit together with these resolutions. I figure at the end of January I’ll do a recap. See what I’ve done, not done, and any changes for the remainder of the year. But first thing on the agenda is to get better and not want to tear out my throat.

Good times

Today was the first day of my midweek weekend so I attempted to do some Christmas shopping. I started strong and then crashed and burned. But the attempt was there so I’ll go ahead and count it. Productivity is a tricky little bastard.

At least I just bought makeup and not clothes. I have more clothing than I can adequately store, yet I always feel like I have nothing to wear. Case in point: the above outfit. The skirt AND sweater both belong to Keiko. Forty-something pounds in my suitcase and I ran out of things I wanted to wear, oh… I’d say about two days into our trip. Or maybe she just had better stuff. Yea, that’s definitely it.

Tomorrow I’ll be baking with some of my friends from work. Hello Sailor is turning into hello gingerbread men. And hey, I’m alright with that.

Hello, Autumn

I speak to my mom multiple times a day. It’s at the point where if she can’t get a hold of me by noon, she thinks I’m dead. But today’s call was particularly cute.

Backstory: My mom is an artist. Our house back in Florida had pictures she had painted hanging on the walls. She also made a big grandfather clock painting that actually tells time. I was always amazed by that one. She taught art for years in New York and Florida but I didn’t think she had created anything in the last few years.

During our conversation today, she told me how she was working on some watercolor paintings as well as a plaster piece. She was giving me advice based on her experiences getting back into her art. She said if it’s not going as planned, you need to take a break and return to it at a later time… hopefully with a clearer head/vision.

That resonated with me because I had just gone through a similar experience. This damn flower crown was a labor of LOVE I tell you. I had another one that I had been working on, but about halfway through, I realized the flowers were way too big (even for me!). I took a week away from it and then went to Michael’s Craft store for some new supplies and a fresh start. Sometimes, that’s all you need. It’s important to allow yourself to go through the trial and error part of the creative experience. You never know what’s on the other side if you prevent yourself from finding out.

P.S. My boyfriend, Will, has started asking me if we’re going to the Harvest Festival every time I wear this flower crown.  Also, a man in the supermarket told me that I was autumn, personified. It’s definitely a conversation starter.
