A life worth fighting for…

Disparate Youth by Santigold on Grooveshark

I feel like I’m out of LA as much as I’m in it these days. Will and I went up to New York to visit his family and one of my best friends. It was such a good feeling to be back. There was a lot of eating, shopping, and playing with dogs. My three favorite things. Will’s dad even taught me how to make shortbread since it’s Will’s favorite. Maybe once I get a mixer, you’ll see a little bit more of that.

I’ve always told people that while I love living out here, my trips make it even better. I think it’s good to get out once in a while. It kind of refreshes everything. Ideally, I’d like to just constantly travel. Which I guess I’ve sort of been doing. I had just finished unpacking from New Orleans and had to repack for the next, much colder, trip. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not good at layering. I wore tank top dresses with a coat and hoped for the best. It’s amazing that I didn’t get sick.  Luckily, my next trip is to Florida for the holidays. I’ll be celebrating Christmas, by the pool.

P.S. (Random thoughts) Everyone has this idea in their heads that you need to pick one job to aspire to and do for the rest of your life. What if any job is ok, as long as it allows you to have the kind of life you want?

Never cursed your name…

These photos were taken on my trip to New Orleans. It was my first time going and I absolutely loved it. There is so much talent in that city. Street performers on every block and they are SO good! Even bars and restaurants had people playing music in them. There were so many different areas but we were within walking distance to the French Quarter, so we spent a lot of time there. While walking to Frenchman Street one night, we ran into a random block party in the middle of the road. That was definitely one of my highlights of the trip. The cops even came and asked the DJ to lower the music and then left. You can take alcoholic drinks to go and just walk to the next bar with them. And if you want to eat friend dough covered in powdered sugar at three in the morning, Cafe Du Monde is open 24 hours. Not that I did that. I’m just saying…. er…. I’ve heard you can.

P.S. We took a ghost tour the night after these photos were taken and found out that we were super close to the supposedly haunted house from American Horror Story. Some crazy stuff went down in that house! I love a good ghost story.

Baby, in the dumpster we will dive…

Dumpster Diving by Castledoor on Grooveshark

My best friend, Keiko, used to go dumpster diving with her mom. They had a local thrift shop back home that would throw out donations that they didn’t have room for. Keiko and her mom would find all these vintage gems in the dumpster behind the shop. While I never went with them, I can appreciate flea markets and thrift shops for the same reasons. If you take the time to dig, you can find some real treasures.

I dragged my boyfriend to the Rose Bowl Flea Market this past weekend. He actually had fun and said he wants to go back to find more things to decorate with. We’re still at the very early stages of getting settled into our new place. While going through the isles, we found a couple that makes beautiful farmer’s tables out of reclaimed wood. That would go perfectly in our soon to be nautical themed dining room. We also found an old copy of the Sea Witch, and some little succulents so I can try my hand at keeping them alive again. There is always a TON to look at and you have to have a good eye. I’m hoping on our next trip, we find even more unique pieces to bring home!

Last weekend was insane between work, shows, and my parents still being in town. And in true Kimberly fashion, I was feeling the after effects all week and it finally caught up with me. Today will be spent in bed. This is the fourth or fifth time I’ve gotten sick this year. My mom says it’s because I “keep burning the candle at both ends.” I feel like I need to make some major changes because I’m of no use when I’m sick. Maybe a blood workup would do me some good.. or vitamins… something!

My friend, Kelsie, took these photos the night that we went with Anna to see the Arctic Monkeys play at the Wiltern. Basically my last fully healthy night. I have the big flea market this weekend and trips to New Orleans and New York coming up, so hopefully I can kick this sooner than later. Send your healthy vibes my way!

You look good when you wear it well…

Ready 2 Wear by Felix da Housecat on Grooveshark

I had this post all ready to go last week and then Tumblr ate it. I don’t know what happened. But I had a long weekend of shows, work, and parents being in town, so I’m just getting around to trying it again. I got an e-mail saying that apparently it’s Can I Get a What What’s fourth birthday today. Not that I really did much with it in the beginning but I’m proud that I’ve kept it going this long and would like to dedicate more time to it. Possibly even cut down how many days I’m at Hard Rock. I have some decisions to make.

I’d like to stay in bed for the next twenty four hours, but I have a date night with my girls at the Arctic Monkeys show. Never staying still. I might be tired, but truth be told, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Just the right kind…

Out Of My League by Fitz & The Tantrums on Grooveshark

This update comes to you from my bed, where I’ve been for the last week. I shouldn’t be surprised… my co-workers, friends, and boyfriend were all sick. It was only a matter of time. And anyone who knows me, knows that I don’t go to the doctor. Ever. But I made an exception yesterday and have been given a nice little assortment of medications. Here’s hoping something works. I’ve been sick three times this year and I’m over it. Viva la health!

Do you know where the wilds things go…

Can I Get A What What

Can I Get A What What

Can I Get A What What

Can I Get A What What

Can I Get A What What

Ahhh downtown LA. I need to spend some more time there. Definitely tons of wild things in those parts. While Keiko and Helena were visiting, we went downtown to visit with the Corey ladies. I usually save downtown for my hair appointments, art walk, and the occasional flower crown hunt. But there really are some great restaurants and bars as well.

I was working an event at Beauty Bar (RIP) one night, back when I was still new to town, and was given some advice: “Don’t get stuck in your bubble.” Basically, LA is made up of lots of little areas. You’ve got the west side, valley, downtown, Hollywood… and in all of those sections, there are even more smaller parts. There is so much to explore and discover. I’ll be honest, I didn’t fully listen. I’ve definitely found a few gems and just kept returning to them. But after trying all these new places while Keiko was here, I have a new mission to try even more. I want to be the restaurant expert when friends come to town. The only way to do that is to eat my way through them. And I’m ok with that!

Crafts and Cocktails: Part 2

This is just a continuation post from the last one. More detail shots of the DIY stations, as well as Elsie and Emma from A Beautiful Mess. They were so cute in person and it was really nice finally getting to meet them. Any party with food and drinks is awesome in my book, but throw in some good company and DIY, and I’m sold! Alexis helped me by taking some of the photos. I tend to get distracted by my surroundings and forget that I should be taking pictures. “I get by with a little help from my friends.”

In other news, I’ve gotten sick again which is really annoying. Keiko comes to visit soon, so I need to get healthy and stay healthy. Off to bed I go!

This past Saturday was the Crafts and Cocktails event with Zooey Magazine, Seychelles, and Ruche. I grabbed Alexis and Liz and headed down for some DIY and sugary fun. The place was packed! There were tons of treats when you first walked in (Alexis and I were particularly fond of the lemon bars). There was a cupcake decorating table and OPI nail station in one room. In the other, there were fabric wrapped hanger, shoe clip, and bow making stations.

The entire event was pure eye candy. Lots of beautiful little details everywhere. The backdrop for the photo booth was made out of cute little vintage saucers (I really want to make a backdrop like this for shoots!). There were beautiful dresses and skirts from Ruche hanging in each room. And since it was in the Seychelles office, there were also tons of incredible shoes everywhere too. I got to see the new items for fall and was completely drooling. I can’t wait for them to come out!

I have a ton of photos from this day that I wanted to post, so “part 2” will be up tomorrow.

a little bit closer

Closer by Tegan and Sara on Grooveshark

Over the last few weeks I’ve been working on some new flower crowns for Emerging Thoughts! I’m very excited that we’ll be putting them up on the site later this week. Going downtown to look for supplies was super exciting AND stressful. I never knew there were stores just filled floor to ceiling with flowers. It was intense!

I’ll definitely be keeping one of each style for myself! I love them and hope you guys do too!
